20 Years of Democracy in Film

In 2009, we are commemorating the 20th anniversary of the collapse of communist rule in Central Europe. The film festival One World Prague and its partner festivals DOK Leipzig, One World Bratislava, Vérzio Budapest and Watch Docs Warsaw are presenting documentary films from acclaimed Central European filmmakers which in different ways address the achievements, challenges, damages and deceptions accompanying the road to freedom after years under a non-democratic regime. Stories of democratic transformation and the restoration of intellectual freedom, but also encounters with unresisted capitalistic thinking and consumer society can be shared by all Central European countries, though perhaps in different ways. The films, presented in five thematic categories, are accompanied by articles which create contexts for the presented films and should stimulate discussions in an on-line forum.

The films are available for streaming for free until the end of 2009.

The titles The Beauty Exchange, Rocking the Nation and Bar at Victoria Station will be available from 13 October to 13 December 2009.

All films are with English subtitles.
